In January 2004, Iranian Nobel laureate Shirin Ebadi had taken a proposal for an International Day of Non-Violence from a Hindi teacher in Paris teaching international students to the World Social Forum in Bombay. The idea gradually attracted the interest of some leaders of India's Congress Party ("Ahimsa Finds Teen Voice", The Telegraph, Calcutta) until a Satyagraha Conference resolution in New Delhi in January 2007, initiated by Sonia Gandhi and Archbishop Desmond Tutu, called upon the United Nations to adopt the idea.

On 15 June 2007 the United Nations General Assembly voted to establish 2 October as the International Day of Non-Violence. The resolution by the General Assembly asks all members of the UN system to commemorate 2 October in "an appropriate manner and disseminate the message of non-violence, including through education and public awareness."

The United Nations Postal Administration (UNPA) in New York City prepared a special cachet to commemorate this event, following a request from the Indian Ambassador at the Permanent Mission of India to the UN. The boxed pictorial cachet design was prepared by the UNPA and was limited to cancellation at UNPA's NY location (not Geneva and Vienna). The UNPA has indicated that all outgoing UNPA mail between October 2 and 31 carried the cachet

About International Day for Elderly People (World Elderly Day)

1st October is celebrated as the International Day for Elderly People each year which was first established at 14th of December in the year 1990 by the United Nations General Assembly. It was started celebrating for the first time on October 1st in the year 1991 to aware the people about issues which affects the elders as well as to appreciate their contribution towards the society.

The day is celebrated every year to make certain the welfare of elder persons as well as to enroll their significant involvement in the society to get promoted from their knowledge and ability. The Plan of Action on Ageing was adopted by the World Assembly on ageing to encourage the society development for all ages. The day is celebrated worldwide to examine issues, promote public awareness and focus on which type of behavior can help older men and women throughout their life.

International Day for Older Persons is specially celebrated for the senior citizens all across the world to focus on the responsibilities towards their lives through the demonstration of promotional material in schools, institutions, offices and public notice boards. People are getting encouraged about their responsibilities towards the lives of elder people to make their life better and happy by analyzing all the problems affecting the life of older people.

The theme of 2015 would be “Millions of tourists, millions of opportunities”.

குழந்தைகள் முதல் பெரியவர்கள் அனைவருக்கும், சுற்றுலா என்றாலே சந்தோசம்தான். இயற்கை எழில் மிகுந்த மலை வாசஸ்தலங்கள், சிலிர்க்க வைக்கும் அருவிகள், வியக்க வைக்கும் கட்டிடக் கலைகள், நதிகள், அரிய பறவை இனங்கள் மற்றும் காட்டு விலங்கினங்கள் என கண்டு மகிழ்வதற்கும், ஒரு நாட்டின் கலாச்சாரம், பண்பாடு, பாரம்பரியங்கள், வழிபாடு, மக்களின் வாழ்க்கை முறை போன்றவற்றையும், நாம் சுற்றுலா செல்வதன் மூலமாக அறிந்து கொள்ள முடிகிறது. ஒரு வருடத்திற்கு உலகம் முழுவதும் 100 கோடி மக்களுக்கு மேல் சுற்றுலா சென்று மகிழ்கின்றனர். சுற்றுலாவின் நோக்கம் மற்றும் அதன் பயன்கள் குறித்து விழிப்புணர்வு ஏற்படுத்தும் விதமாக உலக சுற்றுலா தினம் ஒவ்வொரு ஆண்டும் இதே நாளில்(செப்டம்பர்-27) கொண்டாடப்படுகிறது.

The World Tourism Day celebration was started by the United Nations World Tourism Organization in the year 1980 which is celebrated every year at 27th September. This particular day was selected as at this day the laws of the UNWTO (United Nations World Tourism Organization) came into force in the year 1970 which is considered as the big landmark for the global tourism as it aims to aware to people about the significant role of the tourism inside the international community as well as to exhibit how the social, economic, cultural, political values are affected by it globally.

World Tourism Day 2015 would be celebrated at Sunday, on 27th of September.

This day is celebrated every year having particular theme for making aware the people all over the world. The theme of 2011 event celebration was Tourism Linking Cultures and of 2012 was Tourism and Energetic Sustainability. May be the theme of year 2013 will be highlighting the tourism role to a brighter energy future. The day is celebrated every year on September 27th each year aiming to aware the people about the importance of the tourism.

A message is sent to the general public every year by the UNWTO Secretary-General to participate in the occasion. It is celebrated with the great interest by the various tourism enterprises, organizations, government agencies and etc. Varieties of competitions are held at this day such as photo competitions promoting the tourism, tourism award presentations including free entries, discounts/special offers to the general public.

Tourism has become the continuously growing and developing economic sectors worldwide because of the occurrence of various attractive and new destinations for the tourists. So it has become the main source of income ‎for the developing countries.

First Women won medal in Olympics - Karnam Malleswari

Karanm Malleswari becomes the first Indian women to win an Olympic medal (bronze) at the Sydney Olympics ( 19th september 2000).At the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, weightlifter Karnam Malleswari marked her place in Olympic and Indian sports history. As she lifted 110 kg in the “snatch” and 130 kg in the “clean and jerk” for a total of 240 kg, she took the bronze medal and became India’s first woman to win an Olympic medal.

WORLD WATER MONITORING DAY

World Water Monitoring Day

It was established in 2003 by America's Clean Water Foundation as a global educational outreach program that aims to build public awareness and involvement in protecting water resources around the world by empowering citizens to carry out basic monitoring of their local water bodies. Roberta (Robbi) Savage, ACWF's President and CEO created WWMD and Edward Moyer was the first WWMD Coordinator.

A simple test kit enables everyone, children and adults, to sample local water bodies for a set of water quality parameters including temperature, acidity (pH), clarity (turbidity) and dissolved oxygen (DO). Results are then shared with participating communities around the globe through the WWMC website.

World Water Monitoring Day is celebrated on September 18. It was initially chosen to be a month later (October 18) to recognize the anniversary of the US Clean Water Act, which was enacted by the US Congress in 1972 to restore and protect the country’s water resources. In 2007, the date was changed to facilitate participation in parts of the world where temperatures reach freezing at that time.

In 2006, ACWF transferred coordination of the event to the Water Environment Federation (WEF) and the International Water Association (IWA). The collective goal was to expand participation to one million people in 100 countries by 2012. In January 2015 the management of World Water Monitoring Day was again transferred - this time to Phillipe Cousteau's educational non-profit Earth Echo International.

2008 saw students from Indonesia to Arkansas taking part in water sampling to bring attention to the importance of water quality.

1916ம் ஆண்டு செப்டம்பர் 16ம் தேதி மதுரையில் பிறந்தவர் எம்.எஸ். அவரது முழுப் பெயர் மதுரை சண்முகவடிவு சுப்புலட்சுமி. இவரதுபெற்றோர் சுப்ரமணிய அய்யர், சண்முக வடிவு அம்மாள். சுப்ரமணிய அய்யர் வழக்கறிஞர், சண்முகவடிவு அம்மாள் சிறந்த வீணை இசைக்கலைஞர். தாயாரிடம் இருந்த இசை ஞானம் எம்.எஸ்ஸுக்கும், அவரது சகோதரர் சக்திவேல், சகோதரி வடிவாம்பாள் ஆகியோருக்கும் கிடைத்தது.எம்.எஸ். வாய்ப்பாட்டில் கவனம் செலுத்தினார், சக்திவேல் மிருதங்கக் கலைஞர் ஆனார், வடிவாம்பாள் தாயார் வழியில் வீணைக் கலைஞர்ஆனார். தாயிடமிருந்து இசையை கற்றுக் கொண்ட அவர் 10 வயதில் எச்.எம்.வி. நிறுவனத்திற்காக பாடி சாதனை படைத்தார். தாயைத் தவிர மதுரைசீனிவாச அய்யர், மாயவரம் வி.வி.கிருஷ்ணஅய்யர் மற்றும் புகழ் பெற்ற கர்நாடக இசைப் பாடகர் செம்மங்குடி சீனிவாசய்யர்ஆகியோரும் எம்.எஸ்ஸுக்கு பாட்டு சொல்லிக் கொடுத்த குருக்கள். 13 வயதாக இருக்கும்போது தாயார் செல்லும் கச்சேரிகளுக்கெல்லாம் எம்.எஸ்ஸும் உடன் செல்ல ஆரம்பித்தார். 4 வருடங்கள் கழித்துஅதாவது 17வது வயதில் சென்னை மியூசிக் அகாடமியில் அவர் தனது வாய்ப்பாட்டு அரங்கேற்றத்தை நிகழ்த்தினார். அன்றே பல நூறுரசிகர்களையும் பெற்றார். அதன் பின்னர் எம்.எஸ்.உயரே போகத் தொடங்கினார். அவரது குரல் வசீகரத்தால் ஈர்க்கப்பட்ட திரையுலக பிரம்மா என்று அழைக்கப்படும்இயக்குநர் கே.சுப்ரமணியம் (நடன கலைஞர் பத்மா சுப்ரமணியத்தின் தந்தை) எம்.எஸ்ஸை திரையுலகுக்கு அழைத்து வந்து படங்களில்நடிக்க வைத்தார். அவர் நடித்த முதல் படம் சேவாசதன். அதன் பின்னர் 4 படங்களில் எம்.எஸ். நடித்தார். அதில் அதிகம் பிரபலமடைந்தபடம் மீரா. மீராவில் எம்.எஸ். பாடிய பாடல்கள் காலத்தால் அழியாதவை இன்றும் கூட கேட்டவுடன் மனதைக் கரைக்கும் வகையில் அமைந்தவை.எம்.எஸ்.ஸுக்கும் அவரது கணவர் சதாசிவத்திற்கும் 1940ல் திருமணம் நடந்தது. திருமணத்திற்குப் பின், கணவர் சதாசிவத்தின்வழிகாட்டுதலில் எம்.எஸ். மிகப் பெரிய உயரத்தை எட்டினார். சதாசிவம் ஒரு சுதந்திரப் போராட்ட வீரர். அவர் தனது மனைவி எம்.எஸ். உடன் காந்திஜியை சந்தித்தார். அதன்பின்பு கஸ்தூரிபாய் நினைவுஅறக்கட்டளைக்காக எம்.எஸ். 5 இசை நிகழ்ச்சிகளை நடத்தி நிதி திரட்டிக் கொடுத்தார். எம்.எஸ்ஸின் திறமைகளை செம்மையாக செதுக்கி அவரை புகழின் உச்சத்திற்கே கொண்டு சென்றார் சதாசிவம். நான் பெற்றவெற்றிகளுக்கெல்லாம், புகழுக்கெல்லாம், பரிசுகளுக்கெல்லாம் எனது கணவர்தான் முழுக் காரணம் என்று எம்.எஸ்ஸே பல முறைபெருமையுடன் கூறியுள்ளார். 1997ல் சதாசிவம் மரணமடைந்தார். அன்று முதல் எம்.எஸ். கச்சேரிகள் செய்வதை விட்டு விட்டார். வீட்டிலேயே முடங்கி விட்டார்.கணவரின் நினைவுகளுடன் அவர் வாழ்ந்து வந்தார். கர்நாடக இசையின் ராணியாக கோலோச்சி வந்த எம்.எஸ். பெறாத பட்டங்களோ, பரிசுகளோ கிடையாது எனக் கூறும் வகையில்அத்தனை உயர் பரிசுகளையும், பட்டங்களையும் பெற்று விட்டார் எம்.எஸ்.1974ல் மக்சேசே விருதைப் பெற்றார் எம்.எஸ். 1954ல் பத்மபூஷன் விருதைப் பெற்றார். மியூசிக் அகாடமி வழங்கும் சங்கீத கலாநிதி பட்டத்தை 1968ல் பெற்றார். இந்த விருதைப் பெற்றமுதல் பெண்மணி எம்.எஸ்.தான். 1966ல் ஐ.நா பொதுச்சபைக் கூட்டத்தில் பாடும் வாய்ப்பு கிடைத்து, தனது வசீகர குரலால் சபையில் கூடியிருந்தவர்களைக் கட்டிப்போட்டார். அதோடு மறைந்த காஞ்சி பெரியவர் சந்திரசேகரேந்திர சரஸ்வதி எழுதிய பாடல்களையும், மறைந்த முதல்வர் ராஜாஜி உலக அமைதிக்காகஎழுதிய பாடல்களையும் எம்.எஸ்.தான் பாடினார். இங்கிலாந்து, ரஷ்யா, அமெரிக்கா, பிரான்ஸ் உள்ளிட்ட நாடுகளில் பாடி கர்நாடக இசையின் பெருமையை உலகம் உணரச் செய்தார். இவற்றுக்கெல்லாம் உச்சமாக 1998ல் இந்தியாவின் உயரிய விருதான பாரதரத்னா விருதைப் பெற்றார் எம்.எஸ். இத்தனை பெருமைகளை உடையவராக இருந்தும் எம்.எஸ். சுப்புலட்சுமி மிகுந்த அடக்கமுடையவராக இருந்தார். இசை என்பது ஒரு கடல்.நான் ஒரு மாணவி என்று கூறினார். எம்.எஸ்ஸின் பாட்டுத் திறமையை காலங்கள் கடந்தும் நினைவூட்டும் வகையில் மீரா பஜன்கள், வெங்கடேச சுப்ரபாதம், குறையொன்றும்இல்லை, காற்றினிலே வரும் கீதம் ஆகிய பாடல்கள் வெளிப்படுத்தும். மகாத்மா காந்தியின் விருப்பப் பாடலான வைஷ்வணவ ஜனதோபாடலையும் எம்.எஸ். குரல் இன்னும் தூக்கிக் கொடுத்து இன்றும் பிரபலமான பாடலாக விளங்கி வருகிறது. 88 வயதில் இசைக் குயில் எம்.எஸ். மறைந்தாலும் இன்னும் பல நூற்றாண்டுகளுக்கு அவரது இசைக் குரல் மறையாமல் வாழ்ந்துகொண்டிருக்கும் என்பதில் ஐயமில்லை

உலக ஓசோன் தினம்

உலகில் உயிரினங்கள் உயிர்வாழ வான்பரப்பில் ஓசோன் படலம் ஆற்றிவரும் பணி மகத்தானது. நமது கண்ணுக்குப் புலப்படாத அந்த ஓசோன் படலத்திற்கு மானசீகமான நன்றிகளைத் தெரிவிக்கவும், இன்று நம்மை அறியாமல் எமது நடவடிக்கைகள் காரணமாக ஓசோன் படலத்திற்கு ஏற்பட்டு வரும் பாதிப்புகளை ஏனையவர்களுக்கும் உணரச் செய்யவும், அதே நேரத்தில் அதன் பாதுகாப்பின் அவசியத்தை உறுதி செய்யவும் ஆண்டுதோறும் உலக நாடுகள் செப்டம்பர் 16ம் தேதியை ஓசோன் தினமாக நினைவு கூறுகின்றன. 1987ம் ஆண்டு செப்டம்பர் மாதம் 16ம் தேதி கனடா நாட்டின் தலைநகரில் ஓசோன் படையை அழிக்கும் ரசாயனங்களுக்கு எதிரான 'மொன்றியல்" உடன்படிக்கை கையெழுத்திடப்பட்டதையடுத்து அந்தத் தினமே 1995ம் ஆண்டு முதல் சர்வதேச ஓசோன் தினமாக அனுசரிக்கப்பட்டு வருகிறது. 1994ம் ஆண்டு டிசம்பர் மாதம் 19ம் தேதி ஐக்கிய நாடுகள் பொது சபையில் இதற்கான தீர்மானம் நிறைவேற்றப்பட்டது. பூமியை அழித்து வரும் முக்கிய சுற்றுச்சூழல் பிரச்சினைகளை ஒருமுகப்படுத்தும் தினமாக இதனை அனுசரிக்க உலக நாடுகள் தீர்மானித்தன. ஓசோன் (Ozone) என்பது மூன்று ஒட்சிசன் அணுக்கள் சேர்ந்திருக்கும் ஒரு மூலக்கூறாகும். இது வளிமண்டலத்தின் மேல் வாயு நிலையில் காணப்படுகின்றது. இது ஒட்சிசனின் பிறிதொரு மாற்றுரு (allotrope) வாகும். இது ஈரணு ஒட்சிசன் மூலக்கூறு போல் நிலைத்தன்மை இல்லாதது. இலகுவாக சிதைந்து விடும் தன்மை கொண்டது. 1840ல் சி. எப். ஸ்கோன்பின் (Christian Friedrich Schönbein) என்பவர் ஓசோனைக் கண்டுபிடித்தார். அது ஒருவகையான மணம் தருவது என்ற அடிப்படையில் கிரேக்க மொழியில் மணத்தைக் குறிக்கும் (ozein, "மணத்தல்") ஓசோன் என்று பெயர் சூட்டினார். ஆனால் மூன்று ஒட்சிசன் அணுக்கள் சேர்ந்த விஞ்ஞானப் பெயரின் பொருள் ஓசோன் என்பது, இருபத்தைந்து ஆண்டுகள் கழித்து, 1865ல் ஜாக்ஸ் லூயிஸ் சோரெட் (Jacques-Louis Soret) என்பார் செய்த ஆய்வுக்கு முன்னர் அறியப்படவில்லை. இது பின்னர் சி. எப். ஸ்கோன்பின் அவர்களால் 1867 இல் உறுதி செய்யப்பட்டது. ஒரு இரசாயனப் பொருளின் மாற்றுருவாக (allootrope) அறியப்பட்டவற்றுள் ஓசோனே முதலாவதாகும். புவிக்கு அருகே காணப்படும் ஓசோன் சூழலில் மாசுத்தன்மை ஊட்டுவதாகக் கருதப்படுகிறது. ஏனெனில் மனிதர்கள் உட்பட, விலங்குகள் பலவற்றின் சுவாச செயற்பாட்டிற்கு கேடு விளைவிப்பதாக நிரூபிக்கப்பட்டிருப்பதே இதற்குக் காரணமாகும். ஆனால் புவியின் வளிமண்டலத்தின் மேல் மட்டங்களில் உள்ள ஓசோன் வளி, உயிரினங்களுக்கு தீங்கு விளைவிக்கும் புற ஊதாக் கதிர்களை தடுத்து, உலகில் பாயும் அளவைக் குறைக்கின்றது. சூரிய ஒளிக் கதிர்களில் நம் கண்ணுக்குத் தெரியாத ஒளிக்கதிர்கள் உள்ளன. இத்தகைய ஒளிக் கதிர்களை செங்கீழ்க் கதிர்கள், புற ஊதாக் கதிர்கள் என பிரிக்கலாம். செங்கீழ்க் கதிர்கள் சூரியனிடமிருந்து வெப்பத்தை சுமந்து வந்து பூமியை வெப்பம் அடையச் செய்கிறது. புற ஊதாக்கதிர்கள் பூமியில் மனிதர்களுக்கு மட்டுமல்லாது, விலங்கினங்களும் தாவரங்களும் மிகுந்த பாதிப்புகளை ஏற்படுத்துக்கின்றன. இத்தகைய தீமை விளைவிக்கும் புற ஊதாக்கதிர்களிடமிருந்து (UV) பாதுகாப்பு கவசமாக ஓசோன் படலம் செயற்படுகிறது.

International day of Democracy

The International Day of Democracy provides an opportunity to review the state of democracy in the world. The Day was declared by the UN General Assembly in 2007, and it aims to encourage Governments to strengthen national programmes devoted to the promotion and consolidation of democracy.
The link between democracy and human rights is captured in article 21(3) of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which states:
“The will of the people shall be the basis of the authority of government; this will shall be expressed in periodic and genuine elections which shall be by universal and equal suffrage and shall be held by secret vote or by equivalent free voting procedures.”

ஒரு முறை நேரு தமிழகம் வந்திருந்த போது பள்ளிக்கூடம் ஒன்றிற்குச்

சென்று உரையாற்றினார். நேரு ஆங்கிலத்தில் உரையாற்ற,

மொழிபெயர்ப்பாளர் அதைத் தமிழில் மொழிபெயர்த்தார். ஒரு கட்டத்தில்

நேரு, ‘வேறு யாராவது மொழிபெயர்க்கிறீர்கள எனக் கேட்டார். அப்போது அங்கிருந்தபள்ளி மாணவர்களில் ஒருவன் எழுந்து சென்று அவருடைய

பேச்சை மொழிபெயர்த்தான்.

உரையாடலின் இடையே ஒரு மாணவர் எழுந்து 'தாங்கள் ஆங்கிலத்திலும்

வல்லவர் என்று தெரியும். ஆங்கிலஎழுத்துகளான ‘A,B,C,D’ ஆகிய

நான்கு எழுத்துகளும் வராத நூறு வார்த்தைகளைக் கூற

முடியுமா?' எனக் கேட்டார்.உடனடியாக விடையளித்தார் அறிஞர்

அண்ணா. வியப்பாக இருக்கிறதா? ஒன்று முதல் தொண்ணூற்று ஒன்பது வரையிலான எண்களை ஆங்கிலத்தில் சொன்னார்

அவர். நூற்றை ஆங்கிலத்தில்சொன்னால் அதில் ’D’ என்னும்

எழுத்து வந்து விடும் என எல்லோரும் எதிர்பார்த்திருந்த போது 'STOP' எனக்

கூறி நிறைவு செய்தார். ஒருமுறை அறிஞர் அண்ணாவிடம்
