*Madras Day is celebrated on Aug 22 every year *It was on this day in 1639 when the official transaction of a strip of land between the British and the local Nayak rulers took place *The historic Fort St George stands on that land today *Historian S Muthiah plays a lead role in the Madras Day celebrations every year
From one of the early settlements of the British East India Company to a vibrant metropolis retaining its cultural moorings, erstwhile Madras (Chennai) has come a long way. On Saturday, the city celebrates its 376th birthday.
It was on August 22, 1639, when Francis Day, a colonial administrator, had struck a deal with a local Nayak ruler over a strip of land where Fort St George, which houses the Tamil Nadu legislative assembly, stands today.
It was around this fort that the colonial city started spreading itself.
The document related to the building of the fort was said to have been signed at Chandragiri Fort in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh.
However, the first Europeans to reach the shores of Madras were the Portuguese. They had built a church in Saint Thomas Mount enshrining the Bleeding Cross.
Today, Chennai (the name was changed from Madras in 1996 by the then Karunanidhi government), which is the capital of Tamil Nadu and home to over 5 million people, is called the ‘Detroit of India’, after the United States’ automobile city. It is city with a vibrant cultural life and economic progress.
Chennai was first named Chennappanaikan, in memory of the Nayak’s father, and later its name was changed to Chennapattinam, from which the current name has been derived.
A week-long programme has been organised by various public and private institutions and non-governmental organisations to celebrate the Madras Day to commemorate the city’s founding.
Heritage walks, tours, exhibitions, quiz contests and inter-school events have been planned as part of Chennai’s birthday bash.
The Madras Day celebration focuses on the city, its history and noted historian S Muthiah on this day every year leads a team that motivates communities, groups, companies and campuses to observe the occasion with pride. Chennai, Mumbai (then Bombay) is about 35 years younger.
In 1991, when India faced severe economic crisis, PM P.V. Narasimha Rao appointed apolitical Manmohan Singh as Finance Minister. India's foreign reserves barely amounted to US$1 billion, enough to pay for a few weeks of imports.
By 1994, when he presented his historic budget, the economy was well on its way to recovery. Yet he ploughed ahead instituting deep changes in the institutions of the country.
During his speech in Parliament while presenting the Budget in 1994-95, he quoted Victor Hugo: "No power on earth can stop an idea whose time has come."
His dream was that in a crisis India should undertake basic structural changes, which would lead to the emergence of a new country that would become a major global player in the world economy.
Singh started the process of simplification and rationalisation of the tax system. Many controls and regulation on the industry were removed, which meant the death of the Permit Raj and a free rein to entrepreneurs.
The result was that productivity in the Indian industry grew like never before.

World Day for International Justice, also referred to as Day of International Criminal Justice or International Justice Day is celebrated throughout the world on July 17 as part of an effort to recognize the emerging system of international criminal justice. July 17 was chosen because it is the anniversary of the adoption of the Rome Statute, the treaty that created the International Criminal Court. On 1 June 2010, at the Review Conference of the Rome Statute
held in Kampala (Uganda), the Assembly of State Parties decided to
celebrate 17 July as the Day of International Criminal Justice.
Each year, people around the world use this day to host events to
promote international criminal justice, especially support for the
International Criminal Court. The day has been successful enough to
attract international news attention, and for groups to use the day to
focus attention on particular issues such as genocide in Darfur, Falun Dafa, and serious crimes of violence against women.
Note : The International Court of Justice (French: Cour internationale de justice; commonly referred to as the World Court or ICJ) is the primary judicial branch of the United Nations. It is based in the Peace Palace in The Hague, Netherlands.
The following is an article from a book "The Candle- Zonal railway Institute Tiruchhirapalli" - which stimulates laughing. But actually it reveals the computer illiteracy of a man. Even we have computer we don't use it proper. If we don't take steps for improving our computer literacy our life incidents with computer will end as comedy.

We checked with hardware vendor Santa Singh and he said that there is no problem in keyboard. Because of this we open the E-mail account with password *****. I request you to check this as we ourselves do not know what the password is. 2. We are unable to enter anything enter we click the "shut down" button. 3. There is a button "start" But there is no "stop" button. We request you to check this. 4. We find there is "run" in the menu. One of my friend clicked "run" has ran to Amritsar!
